FBI’S
TEN MOST WANTED FUGITIVE, RICHARD STEVE GOLDBERG, ARRESTED
IN CANADA AFTER TIP CALLED IN TO FBI
LOS ANGELES
Acting on source information
provided by the FBI in Los Angeles, law enforcement authorities
in Montreal arrested Richard Steve Goldberg, one of the FBI’s
Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, announced J. Stephen Tidwell,
Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles ,
and Anthony Batts, Chief of the Long Beach Police Department.
Goldberg, who is charged in connection with various crimes
against children, had been using the name Terry Wayne Kearns
at the time of his arrest.
In recent weeks, an individual
residing in Canada had identified Goldberg as one of the FBI’s
Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and verified the outstanding arrest
warrant for Goldberg by visiting the FBI’s website at
www.fbi.gov, where Goldberg’s
photo and the description of his alleged crimes are posted:
The source then contacted the FBI’s Los Angeles Field
Office and provided the information as to where Goldberg could
be located. Agents with the FBI’s Los Angeles Office then
contacted the FBI’s Legal Attache stationed at the U.S.
Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, with details as to Goldberg’s
whereabouts. On Friday, May 11th, the FBI’s Legal Attache
in Ottawa requested assistance from Canadian law enforcement
authorities in Montreal . Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police (RCMP) and the Montreal Police Service (MPS) responded
immediately and arrested Goldberg without incident at the address
provided by the FBI source. Goldberg, who had been living under
a fictitious name, was arrested by the RCMP and MPS for violating
Canadian immigration laws.
Goldberg is wanted by local
authorities in Long Beach, California, in connection with
charges alleging that he engaged in sexual activities with
several female children under the age of ten in 2001. Goldberg
also faces federal charges alleging that he produced images
of these sex acts which were later found on his computer.
Goldberg is currently being
held on the immigration violation by Canadian authorities
in Montreal, Canada, and is scheduled to be in court on
Monday. It is anticipated that he will be extradited to the
United States to face charges by the state of California
and the United States.
The successful arrest of Goldberg
is a result of a joint effort by the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police and the Montreal Police Service, Interpol Ottawa,
Immigration Canada, the Long Beach Police Department, the
FBI’s Legal Attache in Ottawa, Canada, and the FBI’s
Los Angeles Field Office.
As of March 31, 2007, there
have been 486 fugitives on the "Ten
Most Wanted Fugitives" list. Four hundred and fifty-six
individuals appearing on the list have been located. The arrest
of Goldberg represents the 150th Top Ten Fugitive located
as a direct result of citizen cooperation.
