FUGITIVE
WANTED FOR NEVADA MURDER ARRESTED IN CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA.
ACCOMPLICE STILL AT LARGE
A man wanted for murder in Henderson, Nevada, was located
and arrested Friday in Claremont, California, announced J.
Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in
Los Angeles.
Derrick L. McKnight, 28, was arrested by members of the FBI’s
Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force at a bus station in Claremont
last Thursday afternoon. McKnight and an accomplice, Timothy
R. Burnside, 26, are charged in the state of Nevada with murder,
robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery,
in connection with the murder of Kenneth Hardwick in Henderson,
Nevada.
On December 5, 2006, Kenneth Hardwick, 45, was allegedly
murdered during a robbery attempt by Burnside and McKnight.
Hardwick had been waiting to order at a fast food restaurant
drive-through window.
Based on the state charges, a federal warrant filed in U.S.
District Court in Las Vegas was obtained in February 2007,
charging McKnight and Burnside with Unlawful Flight to Avoid
Prosecution (UFAP).
Recent investigation led to McKnight’s approximate
whereabouts in California and he was located and taken into
custody on May 4, 2007. Timothy Burnside remains a fugitive
and state and federal investigators are actively seeking him.
A photograph of Burnside is available by e-mailing laura.eimiller@ic.fbi.gov,
or by contacting the Henderson Police Department in Nevada.
It is anticipated that the federal government will dismiss
the federal warrant charging McKnight and that he will be transported
by detectives with the Henderson Police Department in Nevada
to face prosecution.
The arrest of McKnight is a result of a joint effort by the
Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force, which includes members from
the FBI, LAPD and California State Parole; the FBI’s
Criminal Apprehension Team in Las Vegas; and the Henderson,
Nevada, Police Department.
