ORANGE COUNTY MAN ARRESTED FOR SENDING THOUSANDS OF EMAILS
AND FAXES TO THE KUWAITI GOVERNMENT
An Orange County man was arrested today for Harassment of Foreign Officials, announced J. Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles. Hamid Mirchi, 54, was taken into custody this morning without incident at his residence in Mission Viejo, California, by FBI Agents.
According to the complaint, Mirchi is charged with violation of Title 18 USC, 112(b)(1), for sending thousands of emails and faxes to the Kuwaiti Government demanding payment in the amount of $30 million for information provided. The Kuwaiti Government began receiving emails in June 2005.
This investigation and arrest was conducted with the assistance of the United States Secret Service, The United States Department of State (Diplomatic Security Service), and The United States Attorney Office. Mirchi appeared in federal court and was released on $25,000 bail.
