UPDATE ON SUSPICIOUS DEVICE REPORTED ON ALASKA AIRLINES FLIGHT

A passenger’s discovery of a suspicious device was reported to a flight crew member during this morning’s Alaska Airlines flight from Guadalajara, Mexico, to Los Angeles, California, and resulted in a law enforcement response. The plane landed at its intended destination, Los Angeles International Airport, at 8:50 a.m. and taxied to a remote location of the airport. Passengers were deplaned immediately and brought to a location via bus while law enforcement officials conducted an investigation. The device was identified as a type of toy transmitter and a thorough search of the plane and cargo hold for explosives came up negative. Transportation Security Administration officials searched passengers’ luggage and personal belongings by hand. Although no immediate threat exists, law enforcement will continue its investigation to determine the owner of the device and the reason it was left on the aircraft. Law enforcement personnel from the FBI, TSA, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs & Border Protection, Los Angeles Airport Police, Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the airport and took part in today’s investigation.
