MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATENING TO SEND
ANTHRAX TO POLICE IN TEXAS
A
Stevenson Ranch man was arrested today for making a threat
to send anthrax to an officer with a police department in Texas,
announced J. Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director in Charge
of the FBI in Los Angeles. Erik William Andersson, 20, was
arrested this morning without incident by agents with the Joint
Terrorism Task Force.
Andersson was indicted under seal by a federal grand jury
on Friday, June 16 th, 2006, in the Central District of California,
charged with using a facility of interstate commerce, namely,
a telephone, to knowingly and willfully threaten and maliciously
convey false information to the Police Department in Stephenville,
Texas. Andersson was allegedly harassing the family of his
former girlfriend, who then filed a complaint with the police
department. It is alleged that Andersson made the threat during
a phone conversation with police regarding the alleged harassment.
Andersson will be afforded an initial appearance before a
United States Magistrate this afternoon in U.S. District Court
in Los Angeles. If convicted, Andersson faces a maximum possible
penalty of ten years in prison.
An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has
committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until
and unless proven guilty in court.
This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal
Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection
Service, both members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in
Los Angeles, and will be prosecuted by the United States Attorney
in Los Angeles.
