MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATENING TO SEND ANTHRAX TO POLICE IN TEXAS

A Stevenson Ranch man was arrested today for making a threat to send anthrax to an officer with a police department in Texas, announced J. Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles. Erik William Andersson, 20, was arrested this morning without incident by agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Andersson was indicted under seal by a federal grand jury on Friday, June 16 th, 2006, in the Central District of California, charged with using a facility of interstate commerce, namely, a telephone, to knowingly and willfully threaten and maliciously convey false information to the Police Department in Stephenville, Texas. Andersson was allegedly harassing the family of his former girlfriend, who then filed a complaint with the police department. It is alleged that Andersson made the threat during a phone conversation with police regarding the alleged harassment.

Andersson will be afforded an initial appearance before a United States Magistrate this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. If convicted, Andersson faces a maximum possible penalty of ten years in prison.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection Service, both members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Los Angeles, and will be prosecuted by the United States Attorney in Los Angeles.
